Dad’s Villanelle

By Philip Charles Williams

Have your cake, and eat it too,
Was what he said to inspire.
Do what you really want to do,

Make motions, move mountains, start
The journey of balance on a wire.
Have your cake, and eat it too.

You can do both work and art,
Make beautiful things from deepest ire,
Turn lost hours into sapphire blue.

Explore the secret chambers of your heart,
The place where you set the world on fire,
Where you have your cake, and eat it too.

Leaving nothing on the table is smart.
Living all the lives you have to live is a life to admire.
The only one who knows your future is you.

All life’s adventures begin as a serious lark,
Where the genesis of myth is desire,
And the best part of life’s greatest coup
Is having your cake and eating it too.
